What’s the best way to defeat a block?
Trick question.
Different blocks require different techniques.
Let’s get into it.
In The Box
Taking on a blocker in close quarters is not for the faint of heart.
It requires a physical collision.
When a Linebacker meets a blocker NEAR the ball carrier, the block must be defeated with POWER.
There are a few power moves to choose from.
The Shock Technique is ideal.
But the Power Rip and Shoulder Charge each have their place.
Either way, one thing is clear:
These types of blocks must be destroyed.
Out In Space
When a Linebacker meets a blocker out in space, it’s a whole different story.
This means the Linebacker is meeting the blocker FAR AWAY from the ball carrier.
While blocks in the box must be destroyed, blocks out in space can be avoided.
Again, there are a few options.
A Linebacker can Dip and Rip, Rip Across Face, or Punch Inside.
Either way, once this type of block is defeated, the Linebacker should stack the blocker.
This means replacing the blocker’s position.
After that, there’s nothing left to do but pursue the football and make the play.
A quick pause here for an exciting announcement!
I will soon be releasing a brand new e-book titled Linebacker Movements.
This book takes a deep dive into Linebacker movement skills, and will come with a bunch of clinic videos.
Coming Soon!!!
Now back to today’s article…
Build The Toolbox
The real secret to becoming unblockable?
Building a TOOLBOX.
Great Linebackers develop both power moves and speed moves.
And these skills are drilled in practice until they become second nature.
That way, on game day, block destruction happens automatically.
There’s no time to think when it’s time to beat a blocker.
Final Thoughts
Block destruction is a key component of elite Linebacker play.
If a Linebacker wants to become unblockable, they need to build a great toolbox.
All the best,
