Undersized Linebackers
...can still make plays.
Of course…
Size is an asset for a Linebacker.
But it’s not everything.
I’ve seen undersized Linebackers dominate on the field.
But…
They don’t dominate by playing the exact same way a 6’3’’ Linebacker would play.
They use self-awareness.
They adjust their game.
They play smart.
Here’s how.
Reads
Reads are a great equalizer.
A small Linebacker with lightning-fast reads is tough to play against.
It’s like they have a head start on every play.
Undersized Linebackers should work obsessively on their reads.
Speed
Blocks can be defeated with either speed or strength.
Undersized Linebackers should choose speed more often.
Now…
You can’t run around every block.
And when it comes time to take one on…
Undersized Linebackers must rely on leverage and technique.
Any Linebacker who understands those concepts can become unblockable.
Fundamentals
A Linebacker who lacks size…
Should make up for it with fundamentals.
Angles, leverage, hand position, footwork…
Pair those with great pursuit and a relentless motor…
And any Linebacker can make plays all over the field — regardless of their size.
Final Thoughts
If you coach undersized Linebackers — or Linebackers of any size — you should check out my newest resource.
It’s a 28-day email course titled THE LB FOUNDATION.
Every day for 28 days you’ll get a short, simple lesson from me detailing a specific aspect of Linebacker play.
And it’ll be delivered directly to your email inbox.
After 28 days, you’ll have a complete foundation of Linebacker fundamentals.
And you’ll be able to explain them in a simple way.
The course starts March 1, and you won’t be able to sign up after that.
