Underrated Coaching Point
This is a powerful one.
There’s a magic coaching point when it comes to Linebacker block destruction.
It’s not a common one.
But whenever I share it with a player or a coach…
Their eyes always light up.
They nod.
And when a Linebacker truly gets it, it changes how they destroy blocks forever.
I learned this one in high school, and it’s served me well ever since.
Ready for it?
Here goes:
When you’re taking on a blocker…
You can see the ball carrier…
And the blocker can’t.
That’s it.
Simple, but powerful.
I mean…
The blocker has no idea what the ball carrier is doing.
(Has the ball carrier pressed front side? Have they cut back?)
The blocker is taught to guess the ball carrier’s position by looking at the Linebacker’s reaction.
Advantage: Linebacker.
Head fakes, jab steps, they can be used to freeze the blocker in place.
Then the Linebacker has all the space they need to win the rep.
I’m telling you…
Any Linebacker who maximizes this powerful coaching point…
Becomes tough to block.
