I’ve been coaching Linebackers at the university level for over 15 years.
The position has CHANGED in that time.
Here’s how.
Run/Pass Read
Back in my day…
Plays used to be EITHER a Run or a Pass.
Now, with RPOs, they’re BOTH.
This has changed the way Linebackers need to REACT versus certain looks.
It adds a completely different dynamic to the position.
It’s fun to navigate.
But it sure is different.
Practice Tempos
I remember WAY back.
When I was still a player.
Our INDY periods used to be the most physical parts of our practice.
We’d work tackling by smashing into each other.
For safety and longevity reasons, we’ve since developed new ways to work tackling.
Drills that work technique without including a big collision.
Now we can TEACH the skill before the “live bullets” start flying.
It’s different.
And, in my opinion, it’s an improvement.
Film Study
When I played, it was VHS.
Early in my coaching career it transitioned to DVDs.
Now, with all this great video software, film study is an entirely different animal.
Players nowadays can watch film from anywhere.
On their laptops. Their phones.
It’s insane.
As a Linebacker, this is a HUGE advantage.
It’s like getting the answers before the test.
Any Linebacker who takes advantage of this modern access to film can become a monster on the field.
Final Thoughts
Yes, the Linebacker position has changed.
