The Shuffle is a KEY type of movement for a Linebacker.
But like anything, there are Pros and Cons.
Let’s get into it.
Technique
The Shuffle is a lateral movement.
A Linebacker typically uses a Shuffle when moving inside the Box.
A few key points:
Shoulders SQUARE to the Line of Scrimmage
Hips SQUARE to the Line of Scrimmage
Low Pad Level
Avoid “Hopping”
Avoid clicking the heels together
Work DOWNHILL
Eyes Up
But when and why should a Linebacker Shuffle?
Let’s dig into that next.
Power
The Shuffle is a powerful movement.
It allows the Linebacker to move with a stable base.
A Shuffling Linebacker is in a good position to take on a block or make a tackle.
Change of Direction
A Shuffle also allows for great change of direction.
If the Running Back decides to Cut Back on the play, a Shuffling Linebacker can easily adjust.
Vision
Because the Shuffle is a SQUARE movement, it allows for great vision.
The Linebacker can keep their eyes fixed on their read while Shuffling.
Speed?
A downfall to the Shuffle?
It’s a slow movement.
But it’s meant to be a slow movement.
If a Linebacker needs to move quickly, they are not Shuffling.
(There are other types of movements Linebackers can use. Faster ones.)
Accept and understand that the Shuffle is slow.
When drilling the Shuffle, Linebackers do not need to fly through the drill.
They should instead focus on power, change of direction, and vision.
A good Shuffle is a fundamental addition to any Linebacker’s toolbox.
