Simplify the Triangle Read
Think about it this way...
I’m a big fan of the Triangle Read.
A lot of coaches are resistant to it…
And I can see why.
It sounds complicated.
But there’s one mindset shift that can really simplify the read.
Let’s get into it.
What’s a Triangle Read?
The Triangle Read involves:
Certain Offensive Linemen, through to the Backfield.
It’s called a “Triangle Read” because it looks like this:
The Shift
I think coaches are hesitant to use this read because it sounds big.
They think:
How can I get my Linebackers to read the Centre, and the Guard, and the Tackle, and the Backfield…
It’s too complicated.
And that argument makes sense.
Simpler is always better.
But here’s the mindset shift:
You’re not reading a bunch of different players.
You’re reading a single picture.
Here are a few pictures the Linebacker might see:
Once a Linebacker learns the pictures — and how to react to each picture — the Triangle Read becomes a powerful way to read a play.
Final Thoughts
Once mastered, the Triangle Read is fast, efficient, and accurate.
