re: understanding LB play
Elite LBs play smart.
If a Linebacker isn’t making plays…
It’s probably because they don’t truly UNDERSTAND the position.
Here are 3 key concepts every Linebacker should master.
1. How READS connect to MOVEMENT
Linebackers should know how to READ a play.
But Linebackers should also know how to MOVE based on what they read.
Is their read telling them to Shuffle?
To Scrape?
To flip their hips?
To SHOOT the play?
Once a Linebacker learns how READS connect to MOVEMENT, they know how to start the play right.
Note: The concept of reads connecting to movement is a key piece of the Linebacker development system. Find the complete system inside THE LB LIBRARY.
2. WHEN to use each Block Destruction move
Linebackers should develop a TOOLBOX of Block Destruction moves.
It should include some speed moves…
And some power moves.
Then…
The next step is understanding WHEN to use each move.
Linebackers learn this by repping different PICTURES in practice.
Once muscle memory kicks in, they become unblockable.
3. How the APPROACH impacts the tackle
Most Linebackers live for the big hit.
But before the CONTACT comes the APPROACH.
Leverage. Space. Angles.
Linebackers need to master these concepts first.
Then they can go make plays.
Final Thoughts
It’s pretty simple…
When a Linebacker plays smart, they play fast.
And when they play fast, they dominate on the field.
