re: Tracking the Back Hip
Leverage. Leverage. Leverage.
Let’s talk about the Back Hip Track.
First, a quick video:
Now…
Let’s break it down.
When?
This technique is typically used when you’re on the back side of a run.
Often versus outside or horizontal run plays.
In these situations, it’s important to keep your leverage.
That’s where the back hip track comes into play.
Why?
The back hip is a good target because it reminds you of your leverage.
If you just “track the ball carrier”, you might overrun the play.
Focus on the hip.
How?
There are three steps to this:
Maintain your leverage.
Close ground on the ball carrier.
Avoid/Destroy blocks in your way.
When you do all three, you make the play.
Final Thoughts
This is a very common picture for Linebackers to master.
It combines a few different techniques, including eye placement, movement skills, and angles.
