re: big plays
How do they happen?
It was the biggest hit I’d ever seen.
And it was right at the Line of Scrimmage.
The Linebacker met the running back in the hole and destroyed him.
Everyone went nuts.
It was awesome.
Those kinds of plays are always exciting.
But…
What everyone didn’t see was all the work that Linebacker had done perfecting that read.
The hours of extra film study.
The time spent in my office going over the fit one more time on the whiteboard.
So that he could anticipate the play based on the formation.
See the puller.
Move to the point of attack.
After that, the big hit was easy.
It was all the other stuff that made that play happen.
And yes…
Us coaches aren’t able to make big hits like that anymore.
We’re too old.
But when you can help guide a player’s efforts…
And help them get into a position to make a play like that…
It’s the next best thing.
