re: a devastating moment
It still stings
Years ago…
I was watching a clinic…
Looking for some drills to use with our Linebackers in the offseason.
I came across this one specific drill for block destruction that really caught my eye.
I jotted down some notes.
And I spent some time thinking about how I wanted to set up the drill.
I thought about the rotation, and the coaching points I’d use.
Eventually, I was all set.
During our next session, I put the drill in motion.
The guys picked it up well.
Everything flowed smoothly.
And it seemed to be a productive practice.
When it was over, I sent the players for water, and one of the veteran Linebackers stayed behind.
He approached me genuinely, and in a completely respectful way, he asked me a question that struck me to the core:
Coach. I liked that drill. So when exactly would we use that move in a game?
I froze.
I didn’t have an answer.
In fact, just as he asked the question, I realized the technique actually wasn’t something that made sense with our Linebackers.
It was a devastating moment.
And that’s when I realized…
That when I put this drill together…
I had skipped over the most important part:
I had failed to figure out how this specific technique actually fit into the development of our Linebackers.
It was an eye-opener.
Up until then, I had collected a massive pile of drills and coaching points.
Most of my knowledge was solid, but it was all scattered and disconnected.
That moment changed something for me…
And I set out to develop a connected system of Linebacker development.
One where each coaching point would build upon the last one…
So our Linebackers wouldn’t just understand what they’re supposed to do…
But why they’re doing it.
It took me years to put it all together.
And now you can access this system inside THE LB LIBRARY.
If you’re looking to evolve away from random, one-off drills, and move towards a connected system of Linebacker development, join THE LB LIBRARY today.
It’ll help you connect the dots.
