All great players study film.
But you can’t just pop in the tape, put the feet up and relax.
Film study must be deliberate.
Here are some keys to watching film as a Linebacker.
Before the Snap
A lot of information can be gained BEFORE the ball is snapped.
Formations, Motions, Backfield Sets.
These are key indicators.
They not only help you anticipate the play, but also impact your responsibility on the next snap.
Focus on how your opponent lines up.
This gives you a head start on the play.
At the Snap
For a Linebacker, this is the key moment.
This is when you get your READ.
The most valuable part of watching film as a Linebacker is to practice your read.
When watching film, get your EYES to your KEYS.
If your coach is asking you to read the Offensive Line, get your eyes there.
If you have a Backfield Read or a Triangle Read, same thing.
Take mental reps and the game will slow down.
Here’s a clip of the great Chris Spielman talking about how he watched film:
After the Snap
As the play progresses, you will learn things about the PERSONNEL you’re about to face.
Does the Running Back like to cut back on run plays?
How good is that Left Guard out in space?
Keep the tape rolling to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your next opponent.
Then exploit them on game day.
Final Thoughts
Watching film is a key component to elite Linebacker play.
Be deliberate.
Get your eyes to the right spot.
Then take what you’ve learned and apply it on the field.
