Down Blocks can be tough.
Typically, with a Down Block, the blocker has leverage on you.
They are already between you and the Point of Attack.
That’s why you need to use great technique to defeat these blocks.
Here are some thoughts.
Recognize the Block
The first step to defeating a Down Block as a Linebacker is to recognize it’s happening at all.
Often a Pulling Lineman will alert you to the Down Block.
When you see the Puller, get your eyes to the front side of the play.
SEE the Down Block and gauge the blocker’s angle.
Now you’re ready to take it on.
Get Over the Block
With certain Run Fits, a Linebacker will be asked to go OVER the Down Block.
You have a couple options here.
You can strike with the hands and work a Shock Technique.
Or you can Rip with the back side arm to clear the block.
Either way, work TIGHT to the blocker.
Fight the pressure as you work over top.
Don’t get washed past the play.
Get Under the Block
There are a couple reasons you might go UNDER the Down Block.
First off, some Run Fits will tell you to go underneath the block.
Other times, the blocker will simply be out of position.
If the blocker has gone way too high with their angle, you might be able to work underneath.
The key here is to defeat the block and STACK the blocker.
That means replacing their position and regaining your path to the ball.
But going under the block can be risky.
If you’re choosing this path because of the blocker’s angle, you must be SURE you can win.

Read the play. See the block. Defeat it.
Beating a Down Block will often put you right at the Point of Attack.
Then it’s time to make the play.
